Our Team

Judith Romero, Founder

After living in Vancouver for 15 years (with a 2 year break in Seville), Judith returned to Calgary in 2021 with her young family in order to be closer to her parents and siblings (and their families). Finally emerging from her home flamenco studio, after young kids and then COVID, Judith was ready to dance flamenco again with others. Struck by the talent and flamenco vibe in the city, Judith decided to work towards creating a space that could be a home for flamenco to develop in the city. Adela & Tom’s Flamenco is the result. Inspired by the informal and spontaneous flamenco she experienced in her grandparents home and the backstreets of Seville, Judith hopes that Calgarians will feel welcomed and inspired to take their own flamenco journey.

After figure skating and playing piano throughout childhood, Judith eventually found flamenco dance as an adult (though she quickly realized that the dance moves her grandmother had taught in the kitchen were actually flamenco). Though Judith’s previous flamenco exposure and dancing/musical background helped her initially mimic many elements of flamenco, it took Judith years to develop an embodied technical base for flamenco. Many of her dancing technical breakthoughs took place outside of the flamenco classroom (including the physiotherapist office, singing lessons and playing with her kids). Judith hopes to provide people with as many insights, tools and resources possible so that flamenco can flourish for individuals and a community.

Do you recognize Judith from her career in Environmental Science? After kids she decided to make her hobby her fulltime gig. She is proof that a love a spreadsheets, science and process translates just fine into the arts. She also has special insights for getting out of your head and into your body.
